Elaine's Revenge

Smoking is bad. I know this. No lectures are needed...I'm going to try to quit because I need sinus surgery and they won't do it unless I've quit for six months. So things are bad enough without harassment! Really, I'm posting this image in honor of Elaine from Totally Like Me, who put up a photo of an ashtray and was chastised for being a smoker.

  • lol it's a very good picture, and i like the title, only my name shows lol it's got very moody lighting that goes well with the addiction :)

  • Smoking will kill you, mate....kidding, I just quit two weeks ago. I'd suggest patches, makes things a bit easier than they would be otherwise. No fun way to do it though. I love those f'n things. If they were healthy I'd have 8 of them hanging out of my mouth at all times.
    Patrick @ 2009-01-17 20:37:52
  • lol at you...

The lighting in this capture is really good and the golden tones go well with the filters.

I didn't chastise Elaine and I won't chastise you. Smoking is an enjoyable thing. Too bad it's addicting and too bad it's bad for a person. I don't smoke, but my motto has always been "Someday health nuts are going to be lying in hospitals dying of absolutely nothing" and the truth is they will. On the other hand on February 19, 1990 my Daddy died from lung cancer. He was allowed to smoke in the house at the age of 5 years old. Yes, FIVE years old. They grew tobacco. I was about your age when my Dad died and I've needed him so many times since then. I still haven't come to terms with it.

  • What? No pretty dish?
    ;-)

  • I'm feeling asthmatic just looking at this and I don't even have asthma.
Why doesn't some smart entrepreneur just invent a healthy cigarette and be done with it?
    cat @ 2009-01-18 01:44:16
  • you know what is said about revenge.. who's weapon it is.. don't want to argue on the subject, sherri already made a good point and overwhelming at the same time.
instead you know.. i really like the picture. well staged and framed.
oh, one other thing, last week watching all my office colleagues smoking, i said to myself that i must collect one day all their cigarette end and make a picture.. it was just a crazy thought, but now i'm serious about it. and then, i will dedicate that shot to you. good luck on quitting.

    romine @ 2009-01-18 02:04:07
  • Good luck! Fortunately smoking is never something that appealed to me so never started! Once you quit, just think of all the money you'll have for new camera gear!!

The lighting and processing work well with this shot.
    Chris Legg @ 2009-01-18 02:56:03
  • Hehe, that's very funny. I like the framing and the crispy details.
    yz @ 2009-01-18 03:27:05
  • Always amazes me how art can be created out of ashes. Wonderful quality of light.
    Marcie @ 2009-01-18 04:20:11
  • A very original macro shot. Nice warm light
    Calusarus @ 2009-01-18 04:52:25
  • Stunning image with such a strong contrast!
    roentarre @ 2009-01-18 05:42:16
  • Sweet shot! I'm a casual smoker myself (only with other people that smoke and when times are a little stressful). I find that some of the most interesting people I know are smokers, or former smokers...
Anyway, I like the tones. It has a "tin-ish" look about it ...don't know if that makes sense. But this is well done.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! And no worries about the political rant :) Given our current circumstances, I don't think there is such a thing as neutral ground.

    Cheers!

  • I can smell the cigs.
    clarence @ 2009-01-18 07:25:54
  • I gave up smoking 14 months ago and I’ve been smoking since I was 17! Just want to give you some encouragement because it does get easier with every month that passes. And my catalyst was also medical – a bout with pneumonia. Good luck Dustin!
    daina @ 2009-01-18 11:51:56
  • A quality image, Dustin, good enough for a magazine spread or poster campaign.

I've never smoked, but I've certainly done drugs so I'm the last one to judge
    EYES WIDE SHUT @ 2009-01-18 14:53:45

  • Very nice details and lighting applied on this magificent photo. I like the just finished cigarette butt!
    Liang @ 2009-01-18 22:59:18
  • Very clever image. Never been a fan of smoking, and this illustrates why on many levels. Disgusting habit.
    EgoPimp @ 2009-01-19 03:33:31
  • great light, very nice close-up
    BoB @ 2009-01-19 05:56:44

    Pradeep @ 2009-01-19 12:17:07
  • Cold Turkey for you then! Ashtrays stink, but they do make for great photographic subjects!
    Arjan - PlasticDaisy @ 2009-01-19 13:36:04
  • For me, every time my girlfriend and I are having a fight, I tend to (over)smoke. So your title, with this photo is kinda painful for me, cause it touches condition that is pretty personal.
Luckily for me - we don't fight a lot (tfu tfu tfu!) :D
    Ilan @ 2009-01-19 15:06:33

    Westy | P H O T O N O M Y @ 2009-01-19 16:57:06
  • color me taken aback, you're getting all these NICE comments about it, wah, nobody likes me everybody hates me i'm gonna eat some worms, then you'll see, you'll all see, you'll see when i'm dead and you'll be sorry waaaaaaah! *GIGGLE* i'm going to quit smoking tonight btw... my husband has given me a good enuff incentive program
    Elaine- @ 2009-01-19 17:54:58
  • Man, I haven't read your commentary yet. But before I do I have to say this: Swingers. This reminds me of the movie Swingers. Hell, I don't think anyone even smoked in that movie. But the feeling is there. The mood. Nice.
    Chris Cardelli @ 2009-01-19 21:58:31
  • oh dear! are we going to see a slew of ashtray pictures now? thanks a lot elaine!
    Turnbill @ 2009-01-20 04:58:03
  • Kool!
    Terry H. @ 2009-01-20 08:05:04
  • Heh. You read my mind - had been thinking about an ashtray macro recently too. Excellent level of detail.
    Tom @ 2009-01-21 16:43:15
  • This almost makes me want to start smoking. Seriously though, glad you're wanting to quit.
    Sean @ 2009-01-21 17:14:57
  • Good luck with it. It's hard. I know this because I smoked for close to 18 years, but I can tell you after 3 years smoke free, I can almost taste how disgusting that looks. Just remember that this will be one of the best things you ever do for yourself.

Plus, if you set aside the money you'd spend on cigs, just think of all the camera gear you can buy. ;)
    Erinn @ 2009-01-21 20:12:52
  • Love the mood in this one. Great shot.
    Jesse Moscoe @ 2009-01-23 09:57:22
  • I like the detail of this photo. I don't smoke but can appreciate the art :)
    Jon @ 2009-01-29 21:56:49
  • Somehow when I click on add, the page went to (can't be displayed).Turnbill mentioned you had a shot of ciggs. So I'm here to check it out. This is charming...and I like the lighting as well. Come check out my butts (Nicotine on Coal)
